International street theater festival SPOT returns to Vilnius on July 8-11!
The theme of this year's - movement in the city.
PROGRAM:
Urban Mobility | Game – discussion
For the first time in the history of the SPOT festival, an initiative brought by the festival‘s organisers will invite different people, artists, and urban environment planners to participate in a game and a discussion which will explore how we move in the city, whether the mobility can be sustainable or commodious, and how we could have a creative perspective towards mobility challenges in Vilnius 2050.
07 / 08 17:00-19:00
Location: Arts Pringing House (Šiltadaržis st. 6)
SPOT | ROLLING THROUGH UTOPIAS | Vladas Suncovas (LT)
Mini golf courses are designed according to different historical, utopian urban furnishing ideas. From Constant Nieuwenhuys’ New Babylon, where on the second floor we are playing carefree lives, while on the first floor robots are doing all our work for us, to Archizoom group’s urban idea No-Stop, where outdoor pools are built every hundred meters in all directions. During the game, the audience is invited to take a stroll around these never-implemented ideas of radical urbanism.
07 / 08-11 10:00-20:00
Location: The Bastion of the Vilnius Defensive Wall (Bokštas st. 20)
SPOT workshop presentation | Be Flat (BE)
Be Flat creative team is organising a physical workshop on “How to create and perform in public space”. During this workshop, the participants will be invited to depart from the usual individual backgrounds and redefine their relationship to the urban environment. In the workshop presentation, we will see how the participants managed to adapt their skills to the context and create a connection with the urban environment while using parkour-based principles.
07 / 08 19:00-20:00
Meeting location: Arts Printing House (Šiltadaržis st. 6)
SPOT | URBAPHONIX | Decor Sonore (FR)
Decor Sonore (France) will invite you for a walk around Vilnius! In the Urbaphonix performance, “Street-Jockeys” without turntables or synthesizers listen to their sonic surroundings and compose using only what is already around us. The performance consists of the mechanical sounds of traffic, the hums of heating ducts and air conditioning vents, bodies, conversations, and even urban furnishings, which serve both as the stage and as a limitless source of instruments for this instant theatre.
07 / 08 20:00-21:00
07 / 09 21:00-22:00
Meeting location: Tibet square, Užupis
SPOT workshop presentation | Benjamin Vanderwalle (BE)
This workshop is an invitation for artists who are interested in placing their work and practice's into the public space. Its an invitation to leave the usual mostly safe context such as a black box, white cube, etc... and to see what happens when the work enters a field where a whole different rules and possibilities apply.
Its a place that is almost the opposite of the usual places where we present work, for example a big part of the audience are people that just happen to pas by and did not expect to see art and where a lot of factors are not controlled. Together we will enter a journey exploring the urban landscape and entering into a guided creation proces towards a public presentation at the end.
07 / 09 18:00-19:00
Meeting location: Arts Printing House (Šiltadaržis st. 6)
SPOT | FOLLOW ME | Be Flat (BE)
In Follow Me, Ward Mortier and Thomas Decaesstecker confront and play with the public space. The duet takes their audience, fellow travellers, and the “followers” on an acrobatic and theatrical journey through the urban environment, along the way encountering various everyday situations. The streets become the stage, urban façades – a backdrop, cobblestones - a dance floor, with the honking of passing cars as a fitting soundscape. Every performance becomes unique by its nature.

07 / 10 13:00-14:00 and 17:00-18:00

SPOT | WALKING THE LINE | Benjamin Vanderwalle (BE)
A silent group of people is walking/moving/positioning themselves in the public space. The participants are guided by clear directions, given by the director/choreographer, who is taking part in the performative installation as well. The performance consists of several powerful images that are constructed together with the participants. Several moving options are explored during the performance, depending on the space of the action, the nature of the group, etc. WALKING THE LINE is a continuous exploration into the possibilities of collective movement and positioning in the public space.

Between 250 kg of straw and 125 kg of human mass, two people are playing around through movement, balance, humour, and composition of space, exploring the peculiarities of human relationships. ENVÀ (in Catalan) means a thin wall that is constructed to separate spaces. People often build mental walls that protect them from serious emotional danger regarding others. We spend our lives looking for a way to free ourselves but all we need to do is to knock that wall down.
